Graduated from University of Edinburgh in 1993, William completed the General Practice Vocational Training Program at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital, London acquiring vocational qualifications in 1998. He speaks fluent Cantonese, Mandarin and English. He has extensive academic and clinical experience having worked in England, Scotland, China, Hong Kong and Australia.He is Advisory and Adjunct Professor for Fudan University and Shenzhen Continuous Medical Education Centre, Shenzhen Health & Family Commission, respectively and Honorary Associate Prof/ Reader for Flinders University, Australia.

Research and other academic acheivements

Dr. Wong's research is focused on sexual health, health equity and health promotion. He is among the most prolific scholars in the field, accruing nearly 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Annals Family Medicine, Lancet, British Medical Journal, Social Science & Medicine, Sociology of Health & Illness, Epidemiology & Community Health etc. He was Principal Investigator of 26 competitive research grants (e.g., Research Grant Council, Health & Medical Research Fund), with the awarded funding over HK$30million, in addition to commissioned projects by the Food and Health Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government and General Practice Education and Training Ltd. of the Australian Government.

Internationally, he has been, on four occasions, appointed Temporary Advisor for WHO whose consultation work resulted in a new guideline, "Prevention and Treatment of HIV and Other STI among MSM and Transgender People" (2011). In this capacity, he delivered a three-day research training workshop for Yunnan CDC and advised on the development of STI Service Delivery Model for Men-who Have-Sex-with-Men in Yunnan, China. He was External Peer Reviewer for "WHO Consolidated Guidance on HIV Prevention, Treatment and Care for the Key Populations" (2014) and "Blueprint for the Provision of Comprehensive Care for Trans People and Trans Communities in Asia and the Pacific" (2015).

He was Associate Editor (2008-16); now International Advisor of Sexually Transmitted Infections, a BMJ-group journal (Impact factor [IF] 3.35), the highest ranking of the subject topic. He was Guest Editor of STI for the special issue on HIV and Health Systems (2012) and served on the editorial board of BMC Infectious Diseases (IF 2.62). He has edited four books: General Practice Nursing (McGraw Hill 2010), Problem-based Diagnosis and Management in Primary Care (CUP 2008), Men's Health (CUP 2006) and Women's Health (CUP 2008), in addition to his contributions to book chapters on gender and health ("Mainstreaming Gender") and reproductive health, a textbook for mainland China. The results of his work have been disseminated to the general public through 69 newspaper reports and, radio (including BBC World Service) and TV interviews.
